🎧 Finding Hope in God During Turmoil | Well Soul Podcast

Turmoil Happens.

Sometimes difficulty arrives like a tornado, blasting through the glass walls of our lives—and leaves shattered remains. A tragic death. A cancer diagnosis. A spouse that leaves.

But most of the time (in my life), the volcanos of turmoil exist only within me.

I stress about a deadline. Worry about my child's future 20 years down the road. I pace impatiently for God to answer a prayer.

What might feel like turmoil in your life today?

This week's podcast passage is helping slow down my inner swirl and focus on where our help comes from.

May it bring you peace as well.

READ

Take a deep breath before you read.

Psalm 42 (NIV)
As the deer pants for streams of water,
so my soul pants for you, my God.

2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
When can I go and meet with God?

3 My tears have been my food
day and night,
while people say to me all day long,
“Where is your God?”

4 These things I remember
as I pour out my soul:
how I used to go to the house of God
under the protection of the Mighty One[
d]
with shouts of joy and praise
among the festive throng.

5 Why, my soul, are you downcast?
Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
my Savior and my God.

6 My soul is downcast within me;
therefore I will remember you
from the land of the Jordan,
the heights of Hermon—from Mount Mizar.

7 Deep calls to deep
in the roar of your waterfalls;
all your waves and breakers
have swept over me.

8 By day the Lord directs his love,
at night his song is with me—
a prayer to the God of my life.

9 I say to God my Rock,
“Why have you forgotten me?
Why must I go about mourning,
oppressed by the enemy?”

10 My bones suffer mortal agony
as my foes taunt me,
saying to me all day long,
“Where is your God?”

11 Why, my soul, are you downcast?
Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
my Savior and my God.

REFLECT

What did the Holy Spirit highlight for you? Focus your thoughts on this for a moment.

What are you facing this week (internally or externally) that might cause your soul to feel downcast?

PRAY

Pray about your reflections above or here is a prayer to guide you:

Father, Son, Holy Spirit, one and only true God, we worship you. Lord, You see the difficulty I am facing within and without. Help me to focus my mind on you—and on what is good, true, lovely and praiseworthy. All my hope is in you. Even if my heart should fail, my faith in you will never fail me because you are God, trustworthy and true. Amen.

Truth for the Week

Focusing our minds on the Lord calms the turmoil within.

How Big is God's Love? Photo by Johannes Plenio on Unsplash "Jesus loves me, this I know," children sing in Sunday school. But do we really believe this? I think sometimes I question God's love—especially when I know I fall short of how he would want me to live. But I'm not alone in my inability to comprehend the vastness of God's love (and neither are you). The Apostle Paul wrote a prayer to the Ephesian believers that they would know God's love. If they already knew the depths of God's love,...

How Can We Know God Better? Photo courtesy of unsplash Sometimes I think we know God as well as we know our distant aunt who lives states away. We believe our aunt exists, we’re related to her, but we live too far away to know her well. Maybe this kind of distant relationship with God is what Apostle Paul felt when he prayed for the believers in Ephesus to know God better (Eph. 1:17). He used two different Greek words for “knowing,” which emphasizes the depth to which Paul longed for...

When You Walk Through the Valley Photo courtesy of unsplash My grandma was the first person I saw die. Several of our family members stood around her hospital bed as she took a painful last breath—and I'll never forget what came to my mind: She was surrounded by loved ones, but she had to cross the valley of death on her own. I think the same is true for many kinds of valleys in our lives—no other human can walk with us through them, completely. This week on the podcast we mediate on Psalm...
